This is an interesting little pocket guide. I've purchased quite a few music theory books in the past, but never really understood music at a deep level. I found myself buying books in the hopes of "getting it", but it never really worked. I still lack that deep understanding (I'm still working on it), but this guide is noteworthy in that it actually made sense and I was motivated to learn the material scales.The material itself is certainly not unique as it can be found in countless other books and online materials. What I do like about it is that it is very clearly and concisely explained. The author does a great job of keeping it simple, yet explaining it well. Well done!
This is not about content-which is rather GOOD. It is about SIZE. The preview on Amazon was greatly ENLARGED so as to be readable, when in fact each diagram is only 1/2 in high. ...I raised my rating from 1 to 2 to 3 stars based on CONTENT which is well laid out and understandable. This would be a 6 star book if it were spiral bound in 10 x 12 pages with the charts at double the size. People would pay the double price required for this improvement.
Likely not the only scale book you'll own, but probably the only one you'd need. Unlike a lot of scale books (and I have owned/own several), this one seems to flow well from beginning to end, starting with patterns that one is more likely to know and moving forward in a logical direction to more complicated scales and those less likely encountered. Which makes it not just a reference book, but also a method book as well, with tips for how and what to practice and tips on fingering, written in a no-nonsense style. The mix of diagrams and text seems about right for this type of book. Yes, it would be nicer if the patterns were bigger and the thing was spiral bound.
I have a shelf full of scale books and several apps as well. This one is the best (and the least expensive, but for the apps). Good explanation, in the fewest words possible, of scale construction, theory, and modes. You can go a mile deep on theory elsewhere if you want, this is all you need to learn and practice scales. Other books have more explanation about root shapes and patterns across the fretboard, box patterns that go with root shapes, and scale construction, but it's all here if you take your time going through it and let it sink in. Wish I'd have bought this book first, the other more in-depth ones later.
This is a great scale book for guitarist and one that I refer to often. I still haven't found the ONE perfect scale book (hence only four stars), but this one comes close. It is one of three scale books that I use, and because of its compact size, it is usually the one that I have handy when I need it. Troy does a great job of explaining the scales and giving some exercises for practice. What I like best about this book is that it shows the scales in all positions across 22 frets with the root notes highlighted. Also, many scale books only show fretboard diagrams of the scales in one key, usually C or E and then explain how to move them around. This book includes diagrams of several keys (including G and A, which are favorites of mine). The only other thing I wish about this book is that it was spiral bound so it would lay flat when open, but I would rather have this book than any of the other gig bag sized ones that are spiral bound. All in all a great little scale reference and cheap too!
I thought I was getting a scale book. All I got was a begginers guide to all the scales I already know. I can't seem to find a scale reference book on here. It is not bad, just not what I was looking for, again!
For the price, I think Troy Stetina & Hal Leonard have compiled the best Little Reference Book I have ever found. I'm in love with THE ULTIMATE SCALE BOOK!
This book is better than a guitar teacher. It shows you the scales, but more importantly it illustrates how they fit together. If you're a guitar player wondering how some players can shred up and down the neck, its because they understand how scales work, exactly what this book teaches you. This book has made it possible for me to improvise solos. If you don't understand how the positions of scales fit together, and major and minor relativity, this book is for you. I have a scale and arpeggio book, the Yngwie Malmsteen DVD, Rock Discipline with (John Petrucci), and this book has been most beneficial to my playing.
