The aim of this little book is to give some background information to students who are approaching philosophy for the first time. As such, it is not intended to be an introduction to philosophy textbook, but more as a companion to a philosophy introductory course or book. Too many students, in my view, complete their introductory philosophy course without an adequate knowledge about the subject in general. There is no doubt of course that having taken a philosophy course they will form a good idea what the subject is about, and what it tries to achieve. But they are more likely than not to leave the course with a vague idea as to its long and varied history, the questions surrounding the vary nature of the subject itself, about its various branches and sub-branches etc… The chapters in this book deal with these and other topics that are generally touched upon, but rarely expanded on, in a typical introductory course of philosophy. They would perhaps be given a lecture or two at the beginning of the course. But these topics are almost never considered important enough to be the subject for further lecture or discussion. Yet, I believe that students’ understanding of philosophy will be enhanced, and they would encounter less confusion and uncertainties, not to mention have greater appreciation of the subject, if they are given information on the topics discussed in this book. In the first chapter, I have outlined the great philosophers’ conceptions of philosophy. In doing so, my aim was to show that philosophy is an ever evolving subject which admits of no final and unanimous definition.
Chapter two tries to show the complexities of philosophical inquiry: Philosophy is indeed a vast enterprise. As such it is bound to be divided into numerous fields of research. My subdivision of philosophy is guided both by traditional practice, as well as by my own conviction as to how the subject should be apportioned. As is always the case with philosophy, there are bound to be some criticisms concerning this, but these I always welcome.
In the third chapter, I have attempted in, as brief a manner as I could, an outline of the History of Western Philosophy with its principal periods, currents and schools. I have deliberately not treated non-Western traditions in this as well as in the other chapters more out of reverence to those traditions than ignorance. I strongly believe that they deserve full-treatment rather than lip-service. Many a historian of philosophy may raise an eyebrow as to my not-so-completely orthodox way of dividing the History of Western Philosophy, but I have found my own method of doing this to be more logical and convincing. Chapter four deals with items that are rarely, if at all, discussed in an introductory class, but which I think should be. I have titled it “The Philosophical Medium”; but it actually focuses on two issues: the questions of literary (and non-literary) styles and genres in philosophy, and the physical and intellectual space of philosophy. I have approached both issues in chronological order. Chapter five deals with the two aspects of doing philosophy: the process of learning philosophy, and the activity of producing philosophy in written form. The final chapter is an essay on the multi-dimensional value of philosophy. The two appendixes that follow are meant respectively to assist students in their choice of reading, and to provide them with some of the essential reference books.
