W. B. Worthen, Alice Brady Pels Professor in the Arts, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Theater at Barnard College, Columbia University. He is the author of Shakespeare and the Force of Modern Performance (Cambridge University Press, 2003) Shakespeare and the Authority of Performance (Cambridge University Press, 1997), Modern Drama and the Rhetoric of Theater (University of California Press, 1992), The Idea of the Actor: Drama and the Ethics of Performance (Princeton University Press, 1984), Modern Drama: Plays, Criticism, Theory (Wadsworth, 1995), and of many articles on modern drama, Shakespeare, and theories of performance. Professor Worthen received his B. A. in English from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and his Ph.D. in English from Princeton University, and has held research fellowships form the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment of the Humanities. He is past editor of Theatre Journal and current coeditor of Modern Drama.

Man this book has been helping me out all through this quarter. It really has a lot of information in it about theater. I just wish it had some things about Indian theater and other theater besides the basic, but I am sure the new edition may or may not have it. In all I really like this book, especially for the price.
Beware! Ordered the full version as listed here. I only received the brief edition, which doesn't have everything needed for my class. This is completely unacceptable, and blatant false advertising.
I purchased this book used, but it's still great! I have a script analysis class, and each play we read is in here along with history about went the play was written to give context and photographs. Sure, it has highlighting on one page, but that not something that bothers me. If you're on the fence, definitely purchase!
In good condition
lots of words on very thin paper.required book, which will probably travel with me from place to place because I never bother to try to resell texts.The writing seems helpful.
I bought this edition as a cheaper alternative to the newer one my professor wanted. It has all the same stories, but my book had many pages ripped out. Some of them were ripped but still in the book but others, including an entire play, was missing.
At today's books prices, better to rent then return.
